Reverse Channel Lettering:
Halo lighting is always a favorite in high end
retail. This is when the face of the letter is made
from brass, aluminum, or other opaque material that
fits in with your design and the neon is not
directly visible. These are commonly called Reversed
Channel Letters. The light reflects back off the
face onto the wall to give it a halo effect. The
return of the letter is usually 3 inches, spaced 1
inch off the wall. As the spacing from the wall
increases, the light spill will be less defined.
Vice versa, if you tighten up the space and put the
letters closer to the wall, the light becomes more
defined. The neon is usually attached directly to
the wall using glass supports. This tends to
increase the amount of installation time. Servicing
the sign also takes longer as the entire letter must
come off the wall in order to get at the neon or
wiring. Because of this, large letters are not
common when specifying reverse channel letters.
Open Channel Letters: This type of
sign is similar to Regular Channel Letters, only
without the translucent acrylic face. These are less
expensive to manufacture, however keep in mind all
the neon is completely visible. These signs are
visible from a long distance and are used when
dealing with excessive heights or on highways where
your signs are far from the flow of traffic.
Channel
Letters on a Carrier Box: This sign is very
similar to Regular Channel Letters, only they are
mounted to a carrier box prior to leaving the
manufacturing plant. These signs are for situations
where going through the wall with all the wiring is
impractical. Hard to reach areas, slanted roof top
signs where the letters are not readable if they
were mounted directly on the roof, or walls made
from jagged stone are all examples whereby the most
practical installation is mounting them on a pre
fabricated carrier box. Visual impact of the Carrier
Box can be minimized by painting it to match the
wall it is mounted on, or can be used as a back drop
to make the sign stand out even more. You can add
drop shadows to the letters by applying vinyl right
on the face of the carrier box, or a decorative
ribbon that appears to be going through the letters.
Carrier boxes, when used properly, can enhance your
design and do not have to be an unattractive
necessity. The advantage of carrier box
installations is our crane truck can lift it all up
at once and only have to drill a few holes. Service
is much easier and economical too.
